Origin & Quality
As a traditional Berlin family business, we see it as our duty to produce our chocolates in a way that is both fair and environmentally friendly. This is particularly noticeable in our short transport routes. For example, we source all our almonds from the Mediterranean and not from California. A circumstance that is also noticeable in the finer aroma of the products made from them. In addition, we do not use palm oil to counteract the exploitation of the rainforests and we do not use chemical preservatives. We use numerous spirits from Europe such as Marc de Champagne, cherry liqueur & Co.
Chocolates from Berlin
Our chocolates are 100% made in Berlin. Delicious pralines and truffles require a lot of experience and a steady hand to draw the elaborate decorations. With us, every praline, every truffle and every hollow body is made in the Berlin Reinickendorf. Our fillings such as ganaches, creams and liquid centres are hand made in Berlin as well.
An experienced team of 15 nationalities creates the products. Confectioners, pastry chefs, confectionery technologists and confectionery makers create pralines, truffles and chocolate specialities according to traditional recipes and from only the finest ingredients. At Sawade, we benefit from over 140 years of tradition and experience. A wealth of knowledge that we have been passing on to apprentices for years.
There are also innovations at Sawade in the area of packaging. We are changing our shipping boxes to recycled material and introducing a new size "XS" to reduce the padding material for small shipments. We have replaced this material with paper chips, which are sustainably produced and use less material for the same volume. For a large part of our foils we use cellophane, which is made from renewable and compostable raw materials.
We manufacture our coloured chocolate boxes as sustainable hard cardboard boxes out of conviction and not as cheap folding boxes. They should be reused as decorative storage and not end up directly in the rubbish. Our customers regularly send us their most beautiful ideas. Our praline trays are loose so that they can be disposed of cleanly and separately and, as they are unprinted, can be recycled.
Step by Step
Reaching our Goals
Sustainability is the topic of our time. At the Sawade praline manufactory, we are also taking up this challenge; for a better world and for future generations. We talk about our suppliers and sources of supply, how we can shorten transport routes and save packaging material. For us as a manufactory, not everything is always possible immediately, but much can be achieved step by step. "Rome wasn't built in a day ..."
Breaking down Barriers
We are gradually adding Braille to the outside of our boxes to help break down barriers and integrate blind and visually impaired people in Germany.
Vegan & Low Sugar
From September 2022, we are expanding our vegan product line. In addition to an already very popular classic box of 100g vegan chocolates, there will be a new small round box and a Premium Blend. Our (vegan) marzipan made from 100% marzipan paste with an almond content of 52% is also very popular. It has a balanced sweetness with a significantly lower sugar content than conventional marzipan. For our chocolates, we have always used a balanced sweetness and have been careful in our use of sugar. We avoid cheap sugar substitutes out of conviction and love for quality.
... Sustainability is a great challenge for all of us. For us as a Berlin praline manufacturer, it is a path that is not always easy. Some processes and supply chains are deeply rooted in the company. But we accept the challenge and strive for optimisations. And we do so with enthusiasm! Because changing things for the better brings something else above all: the joy of being part of a movement with a historic goal.
